Here's a link that will be of interest to the Euro banknote collectors here; www.ecb.europa.eu/bc/faqbc/design/html/index.en.html . It's interesting to know that the Cypriot Euro notes will be getting the letter 'G' as their serial number prefix,& that the Maltese Euro notes will be getting the letter 'F' as their serial number prefix. That's a great piece of information. Don't you believe that the prefixes of the countries are somewhat different than you would expect?

Arne, when I first heard in late 2001 that the Euro notes were coming out,I originally thought that each country would be given a 2 letter code based on their name in English - 'IR' for the Republic of Ireland, for example.

Aidan. Yes I fully agree, it would make a logic combination and it would make it easy for people to retrieve more information from the note itself.

After taking a quick look at the map, I do see a few problems. What if besides Slovenia, Slovakia decides to join? Or Belgium and Belarus?

Bart, the country codes could have been based on the end codes of websites' domain names.

I don't think so Aidan, for example: Belgium has domain name .BE but prefix Z on the notes Germany has domain name .DE but prefix X on the notes And there's no link between the other countries and their domain names aswell.

Arne,Ireland has the domain name ending '.ie',but 'T' as its prefix on their Euro notes.I've got the Irish 2002 5 & 10 Euros with the late Wim Duizenberg's signature.Eventually,I will be getting the Irish 5 & 10 Euros with Jean-Claude Trichet's signature.
Aidan.

I haven't seen any Irish banknotes. Here they are mostly Belgian and German.
